Für die apo- und semiaposymbiontischen Nymphen und Imagines der Zikade konnte eine synthetische Minimaldiät entwickelt werden. Sie unterscheidet sich von der der symbiontenführenden Insekten durch einen höheren pH und pO sowie durch größeren Ionen- und Molekülreichtum: Die Protoplastoiden spielen folglich eine entscheidende Rolle im Anabolismus des Wirtes.

The synthetic “minimal medium” prepared for the apo- or semiaposymbiontic nymphs and adults differs from that of symbiontic hosts by its higher pH- and pO-values and by its higher content of inorganic ions and organic molecules: The symbionts thus play an essential role in the host anabolism.
