According to the official version of the incident, the Jalisco Cartel New Generation (Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación – CJNG) kidnapped and killed the students, then dissolved their bodies in acid. They had allegedly confused them with members of a rival group that, until now, was little-known: the Nueva Plaza Cartel.
