Esta gran cantidad de lagunas regula y conserva a los riachuelos de la zona a través de su drenaje; ríos como el Tomebamba , el Mazán , el Yanuncay y el Migüir nacen en el Cajas y abastecen de agua potable a la ciudad de Cuenca; son, a la vez, principales aportadores del Complejo Hidroeléctrico Paute, que provee de electricidad a casi todo el país.
