To Mach are attributed a number of principles that distill his ideal of physical theorisation—what is now called "Machian physics": It should be based entirely on directly observable phenomena (in line with his positivistic leanings) It should completely eschew absolute space and time in favor of relative motion Any phenomena that would seem attributable to absolute space and time (e.g., inertia and centrifugal force) should instead be seen as emerging from the large scale distribution of matter in the universe.

Aan Mach wordt een aantal principes toegeschreven voortkomend uit zijn ideaal van fysieke theorievorming, tegenwoordig genoemd machiaanse fysica, namelijk: De theorie moet volledig worden gebaseerd op direct waarneembare verschijnselen (in lijn met zijn positivistische inslag) Abstracties zoals absolute ruimte en absolute tijd dienen vermeden te worden: alles is relatief Alle verschijnselen die er op lijken dat ze zijn toe te schrijven aan absolute ruimte en tijd (bijvoorbeeld inertie en middelpuntvliedende kracht) moeten worden gezien als effecten van de grootschalige verdeling van materie in het universum Dit laatste principe is met name door Albert Einstein als hét principe van Mach gekozen.
