A barát pedig, anélkül hogy a tőrt a sebből kihúzta volna, az ablakhoz rohant, kinyitotta, leugrott a kiskert virágaira, beosont az istállóba, fogta öszvérét, kisurrant egy hátsó kapun, a közeli erdőcskéig kocogott, ott barátcsuháját ledobta, batyujából teljes lovagruhát vett elő, magára ölté, gyalogszerrel eljutott a legelső postaállomásig, lovat vásárolt, s lóhalálában folytatta útját Párizs felé.
