First appearing in 1949, it is ascribed to Gustave Tops, a Belgian barman, who created it at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels in honor of Perle Mesta, the then U.S. ambassador in Luxembourg.

블랙 러시안은 1949년에 탄생하였다. 벨기에 바텐더인 구스타브 톱스 (Gustave Taps)가 만든 것으로 알려져 있는데, 브뤼셀의 호텔 메트로폴에서 당시 룩셈부르크의 미 대사였던 펄 메스타를 위해 만들었다고 한다.
