Exploratory investigations of the pit structure of softwoods and hardwoods, of the warty layer of the secundary wall of softwoods, of the differences between the pith and the secondary xylem and the structure of vessels of different hardwoods show the capacity and flexibility of this instrument and some of the results available from increment cores.
