Based on the traditional worldview of the Vietnamese people, Quẻ Càn also denotes the South, the Vietnamese Nation, Vietnamese people, and the people's power. Another interpretation places the three red bands as symbols of the three regions of Vietnam: North, Central, and South. With the foundation of the republic in 1955, the flag was adopted by the successor state, the Republic of Vietnam (more commonly known as South Vietnam).

흰 바탕의 아래에 파란색 띠가 그려져 있으며 띠 위에는 베트남 인민 해군 로고가 그려져 있음. 베트남의 국기 는 금성홍기 (金星紅旗)라고도 하며, 베트남 혁명가인 응우옌 흐우 티엔이 1940년 프랑스 식민통치에 반기를 든 코친차이나 봉기 에서 처음 사용했다. 1955년 11월 30일 베트남 인민공화국(북 베트남)의 국기로 채택되었다.
