A number of differences were found between the PSs with a nursing background and those with a practice assistant background.The most striking difference is that the former practice assistants write more prescriptions but make less use of written protocols than the PSs with a background in nursing.Conclusion This sample survey shows that the establishment of the function of PS has achieved the goal of the LHV (Dutch Association of General Practitioners): that of integrating into the general practice setting a professional who is able to take over tasks delegated by the GP.

POH’s met een achtergrond als verpleegkundige verschilden van hun collega’s met een achtergrond als doktersassistente. Wat hierbij het meest opvalt is dat voormalige doktersassistenten meer recepten uitschreven dan verpleegkundigen, maar daarbij minder vaak schriftelijke protocollen gebruikten dan verpleegkundigen.Conclusie Deze steekproef laat zien dat met het instellen van de functie van POH het doel van de Landelijke Huisarts Vereniging (LHV) is bereikt: een professional in de huisartsenpraktijk integreren die (gedelegeerd) medische taken overneemt van de huisarts.
