He could not explain, however, why he had not used the term in his statement.181 Capt Rainville wrote in his statement that they "walked along the wire".182 MCpl Countway also referred to the supposed 'cloverleaf' in his testimony, although he had said in his May 1993 interview with MWO Bernier of the Military Police that the men were just walking by.183 When pressed, MCpl Countway could not state clearly what a thief would do that was different from what he saw as a "cloverleaf recce".184 This is significant because, when interviewed by the Military Police, MCpl Countway characterized the mission as having to do with stopping "burglars"; it was only after the general court martial of Capt Rainville that MCpl Countway began to use the terms cloverleaf and saboteurs.185 We do not believe that the two Somalis conducted a cloverleaf recce in the military sense that some members of the patrol now claim.

Le cpl Lalancette a été le premier à apercevoir les deux Somaliens depuis la tour du 1er Commando et, selon lui, ces derniers « se promenaient » en direction de la rivière dans le sentier qui longe le côté est du périmètre du complexe du génie173. Le cpl Lalancette, qui n'a pas été impliqué dans l'opération menée par le peloton de reconnaissance ou dans le tir des coups de feu, a surveillé attentivement la progression des deux Somaliens à l'aide d'un appareil de vision nocturne à longue portée très efficace.
