Johan de Witt was a member of the old Dutch patrician family De Witt. His father was Jacob de Witt, an influential regent and burgher from the patrician class in the city of Dordrecht, which in the seventeenth century, was one of the most important cities of the dominating province of Holland. Johan and his older brother, Cornelis de Witt, grew up in a privileged social environment in terms of education, his father having as good acquaintances important scholars and scientists, such as Isaac Beeckman, Jacob Cats, Gerhard Vossius and Andreas Colvius.

Johan de Witt nació el 24 de septiembre de 1625 en la ciudad de Dordrecht en los Países Bajos. Su padre fue el burgomaestre Jacob de Witt y su madre Anna van den Corput. Johan de Witt tuvo dos hermanas y un hermano conocido como Cornelio de Witt.[2] Creció en un ambiente privilegiado en términos de educación, debido a que su padre era allegado a ser un estudiante altamente talentoso, y se le premió permitiéndole hacer el rol de Julio César en una obra dramática de su escuela.
