Additionally, B cells present antigens (they are also classified as professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs)) and secrete cytokines. In mammals, B cells mature in the bone marrow, which is at the core of most bones. In birds, B cells mature in the bursa of Fabricius, a lymphoid organ where they were first discovered by Chang and Glick, (B for bursa) and not from bone marrow as commonly believed.

บีเซลล์ () เป็นเซลล์เม็ดเลือดขาวประเภทลิมโฟไซต์ ซึ่งเมื่อถูกกระตุ้นด้วยสารแปลกปลอมหรือแอนติเจนจะพัฒนาเป็นพลาสมาเซลล์ที่มีหน้าที่หลั่งแอนติบอดีมาจับกับแอนติเจน บีเซลล์มีแหล่งกําเนิดในร่างกายจากสเต็มเซลล์ ที่ชื่อว่า "Haematopoietic Stem cell" ที่ไขกระดูก พบครั้งแรกที่ไขกระดูกบริเวณก้นกบของไก่ ที่ชื่อว่า Bursa of Fabricius จึงใช้ชื่อว่า "บีเซลล์" (บางแห่งอ้างว่า B ย่อมาจาก Bone Marrow หรือไขกระดูกซึ่งเป็นที่กําเนิดของบีเซลล์ แต่นี่เป็นเพียงความบังเอิญเท่านั้น)
