The first sui generis model for the protection of traditional knowledge-related subject matter was developed jointly by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and WIPO in 1982 and is embodied in the UNESCO-WIPO Model Provisions for National Laws on the Protection of Folklore from Illicit Exploitation and Other Prejudicial Actions.
