وفي أثناء الأربعين سنة الماضية، تم اتباع ثلاثة مفاهيم تصميمية أساسية لتكنولوجيا التعدين: التقاط العقيدات بجُماعة من نوع الجرافة ونقلها عبر أنبوب؛ أو التقاطها بواسطة جمُاعة في شكل قادوس وسحب الجُماعة إلى فوق بحبل أو سلك؛ أو التقاطها بجُماعة من نوع الجرافة وترك الجُماعة ترتفع إلى سطح الماء باندفاع تلقائي منها.

During the past 40 years, three basic design concepts for mining technology have been pursued: picking up nodules with a dredge-type collector and lifting them through a pipe; picking them up with a bucket-type collector and dragging the bucket up with a rope or cable; and picking up nodules with a dredge-type collector and allowing the collector to ascend by the force of its own buoyancy.
