Indeed, while there is no lack of great Catholic poets who combine the useful with the enjoyable, Dante has the singular merit that while he fascinates the reader with wonderful variety of pictures, with marvellously lifelike colouring, with supreme expression and thought, he draws him also to the love of Christian knowledge, and all know how he said openly that he composed his poem to bring to all "vital nourishment."

Anzi, mentre non è scarso il numero dei grandi poeti cattolici che uniscono l’utile al dilettevole, in Dante è singolare il fatto che, affascinando il lettore con la varietà delle immagini, con la vivezza dei colori, con la grandiosità delle espressioni e dei pensieri, lo trascina all’amore della cristiana sapienza; né alcuno ignora che egli apertamente dichiara di aver composto il suo poema per apprestare a tutti vitale nutrimento.
