With the eventual development of Twelverism into the more literalistic (zahir) oriented Akhbari and later Usuli schools of thought, Shi'i Islam developed into two separate directions: the metaphorical Ismaili group focusing on the mystical path and nature of God, with the "Imām of the Time" representing the manifestation of esoteric truth and intelligible reality, with the more literalistic Twelver group focusing on divine law (sharia) and the deeds and sayings (sunnah) of Muhammad and the Twelve Imams who were guides and a light to God.

Me zhvillimin eventual të Twelverism në të më shumë literalistic ( zahir ) të orientuar Akhbari dhe më vonë Usuli shkollave të mendimit, Islami Shi'it zhvilluar në dy drejtime të veçanta: të grupit metaforik Ismaili duke u përqëndruar në mistike rrugën dhe natyrën e Perëndisë , me "Imam e kohës "përfaqëson manifestimin e së vërtetës dhe realitetit, me grupi më literalistic të Dymbëdhjetëve, duke u fokusuar në ligjin hyjnor ( sheriatit ) dhe veprat e mira dhe thëniet ( Sunetit ) të Muhamedit dhe të Dymbëdhjetë Imamëve që ishin udhëzon dhe një dritë ndaj Zotit.
