لقد عين الأمين العام الفريق الحالي في 2 آب/أغسطس 2000 لفترة أولية مدتها أربعة أشهر تبدأ ببداية مباشرته العمل بفعالية على جمع المعلومات عن الانتهاكات المحتملة للتدابير التي فرضها قرار المجلس 1171 (1998) والصلة بين الاتجار بالماس والاتجار بالأسلحة، فضلا عن النظر في عدم كفاية نظم مراقبة الحركة الجوية في المنطقة.

The present Panel was appointed by the Secretary-General on 2 August 2000, for an initial period of four months from its effective entry into operation, to collect information on the possible violations of the measures imposed by Council resolution 1171 (1998) and the link between the trade in diamonds and the trade in arms, as well as to consider the inadequacy of air traffic control systems in the region.

El Grupo de Expertos que hoy nos ocupa fue nombrado por el Secretario General el 2 de agosto de 2000 por un período inicial de cuatro meses a partir del inicio de sus funciones con el fin de recopilar información sobre las posibles violaciones de las medidas impuestas por la resolución 1171 (1998) del Consejo y sobre el vínculo entre el comercio de diamantes y el comercio de armas, así como para estudiar la insuficiencia de los sistemas de control del tráfico aéreo de la región.

Le Groupe qui nous occupe a été créé par le Secrétaire général le 2 août 2000 pour une période initiale de quatre mois à partir de son entrée en fonction, afin de rassembler des informations au sujet des violations éventuelles des restrictions imposées par la résolution 1171 (1998) ainsi que des liens entre le commerce des diamants et le commerce des armements, et afin d’examiner si les systèmes de contrôle de la navigation aérienne dans la région étaient adéquats.
