But, as by this theory innumerable transitional forms must have existed, why do we not find them embedded in countless numbers in the crust of the earth?... But in the intermediate region, having intermediate conditions of life, why do we not now find closely-linking intermediate varieties?

Pourquoi, la nature ne baigne-t-elle pas dans la confusion au lieu d'avoir, comme tel est le cas, des espèces bien définies?...Cependant, comme cette théorie nous indique l'existence certaine d'innombrables formes transitionnelles, pourquoi ne les trouve-t-on pas dans la croûte terrestre?... Pourquoi dans les régions intermédiaires, ayant des conditions de vie intermédiaires, ne trouve-t-on pas des variétés intermédiaires très proches?
