A gene probe constructed from the "alkB" PCR fragment from strain Q15 did hybridize with the alkB PCR fragments from most of the psychrotrophic alkane biodegraders, indicating that the alkB primers may be amplifying another gene(s), perhaps with low homology to P. oleovorans alkB, which may be involved in the biodegradation of both short chain (dodecane) and longer chain alkanes (hexadecane, octacosane).

Une sonde génomique construite à partir du fragment PCR "alkB" de la souche Q15 hybridait avec les fragments alkB obtenus par PCR de la majorité des souches psychrotrophes capables de dégrader les alcanes, suggérant que les amorces alkB pourraient amplifier un autre ou plusieurs autres gènes ayant possiblement une faible homologie avec alkB de P. oleovorans, et qui pourraient être impliqués dans la biodégradation des alcanes à chaîne courte (dodécane) et à chaîne plus longue (hexadécane, octasodécane).
