These phosphates and nitrates concentrate in lakes and estuaries causing algal blooms, by which wide expanses of water get choked, plants rot, oxygen is used up and fish die.

ये फास्फेट और नाइट्रेट झीलों और नदियों के मुहानों में जमा हो जाते हैं. इनके फलस्वरूप उन स्थानों पर काफी अधिक मात्रा में शैवाल उग आती है. इससे दूर-दूर तक पानी शैवालों से भर जाता है, पौधे सड़ जाते हैं और पानी की सारी आक्सीजन समाप्त हो जाने से मछलियां मर जाती हैं.
