Major factors in the definitive diagnosis of POAG include cupping of the optic nerve head, glaucomatous visual field defects and often, but not always, a raised level of IOP.12 Shallowing of the anterior chamber is the key diagnostic element for PACG.12 Although glaucoma is readily detectable in its advanced stages, the presence or absence and severity of conditions vary in the early stages of the disease and for each person.

Autrefois, après une seule lecture tonométrique, on classait le sujet dans l'une ou l'autre des catégories suivantes pour le glaucome : normal (<21 mmHg), suspect (21-24 mmHg) et anormal (>24 mmHg)109. Le GPAO associé à une élévation de la PIO au moment du test n'est toutefois pas aussi fréquente qu'on le croyait.
