He gave the Van ‘t Hoff Centennial lecture at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001, the Carothers Lecture at Dupont Wilmington in 2005 and provided the keynote science lecture at Lowlands University 2009, as part of the Lowlands music- and culture festival (Flevopolder, The Netherlands).
