Desalination is an artificial process by which saline water (generally sea water) is converted to fresh water. The most common desalination processes are distillation and reverse osmosis.

การกําจัดความเค็ม คือกระบวนการเทียมในการทําให้น้ําเค็ม (ส่วนใหญ่คือน้ําทะเล) เปลี่ยนเป็นน้ําจืด กระบวนการกําจัดความเค็มที่ใช้กันโดยทั่วไปได้แก่ วิธีการกลั่น (distillation) และ วิธีออสโมซิสผันกลับ (reverse osmosis) การกําจัดความเค็มสําหรับการสร้างแหล่งน้ําใช้ ในปัจจุบันยังมีค่าใช้จ่ายที่แพงมากเมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับทางเลือกอื่น
