In the subtype “durian germination” (Ng 1978) the hypocotyl elongates but the cotyledons are shed while still enclosed within the seedcoat (e.g. Durio zibethinus, Strombosia javanica). In hypogeal germination, the cotyledons remain in situ underground or on the ground while elongation takes place in the plumule.
