Several delegations proposed the need to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems in areas beyond national jurisdiction as a whole, rather than the protection of individual components of these ecosystems. These included, inter alia, seamounts, hydrothermal vents, deep-sea trenches, deep-sea coral reefs, cold seeps and pockmarks
