The word reshit is found 20 times in the Chumash[5] and over 50 times in the entire Tanach.[6] It is used in relation to the beginning of a king’s reign, compare with Genesis 10:10, a firstborn son, compare with Genesis 49:3; Deuteronomy 21:17, the firstfruits of the land, compare with Exodus 23:19; 34:26 and so on. In Proverbs 8:22, wisdom, which is the Torah, is called “the beginning (reshit) of his way”.
