AIP is a rare and difficult diagnosis due to the aspecific clinical, morphological and histopathological findings. It is characterized by hypergammaglobulinemia, elevated levels of immunoglobuline G4, positive autoantibodies, a focal or global enlargement of the pancreas, irregular narrowing of the pancreatic duct, dense pancreatic fibrosis and lymphoplasmocytic infiltrations, the association with other auto- immune diseases and its clinical and biochemical response upon treatment with steroids.

Auto-immune pancreatitis is een zeldzame aandoening die moeilijk te diagnosticeren is wegens de aspecifieke bevindingen op het vlak van de kliniek, histopathologie en beeldvorming. Ze wordt gekenmerkt door een hypergammaglobulinemie en/of een gestegen immunoglobuline G4, positieve autoantilichamen, een focale of fibrotische veranderingen en lymfoplasmocytaire infiltraten bij pathologisch-anatomisch onderzoek. Soms is er een associatie met andere auto-immuunpathologie en, wel vrij typisch, is een zeer goed antwoord op corticosteroïden.
