Desde san Gregorio Magno al Concilio ecuménico Vaticano II, desde san Agustín y santo Tomás de Aquino hasta el Código de derecho canónico promulgado en 1983, el magisterio y la teología clásica han reconocido como válidos estos sacramentos, cuando se cumplen las condiciones necesarias de validez, basándose en el hecho de que «la virtud de Cristo que actúa en los sacramentos no es obstaculizada por la condición indigna del ministro», como afirma una frase del papa Anastasio II citada en el dictamen de uno de los expertos.
