The first space occupies the former Municipal Theatre, a 19th century construction designed by architect Roca i Bros. The original building had burnt down and was later converted into the Theatre-Museum in accordance with the lines and designs of Dalí.

El proceso de creación del Teatro-Museo dio comienzo en 1961; el centro, finalmente, abrió sus puertas el 28 de septiembre de 1974, si bien todavía seguiría definiéndose hasta la muerte del pintor, en 1989, dado que Salvador Dalí no dejó de hacer nuevas aportaciones y cambios en sus salas hasta el último momento.
