Gilbert (USGS unpubl. report) based his reasoning for non-native status in New Brunswick on three arguments: 1) that Kendall (1914) reported that the northern limit of the range was the Penobscot, Kennebec, and Androscoggin river drainages of Maine; 2) there is confusion over identity of the sunfish in the Cox (1896) report; and, 3) the species has not been found in Nova Scotia (Livingstone 1953) – it might be expected to be in Nova Scotia if it was native to New Brunswick.

À cet égard, l’argumentation de Gilbert repose sur les points suivants : 1) Kendall (1914) a donné comme limite nord de l’aire de répartition les réseaux hydrographiques des rivières Penobscot, Kennebec et Androscoggin, au Maine, 2) il y a confusion quant à l’identité du crapet dans le rapport de Cox (1896), et 3) l’espèce n’a pas été trouvée en Nouvelle-Écosse (Livingstone, 1953) – si l’espèce était indigène au Nouveau-Brunswick, on pourrait s’attendre à la trouver en Nouvelle-Écosse.
