At the same time she must carry on the dialogue that Paul VI, in his Encyclical Ecclesiam Suam called "the dialogue of salvation", distinguishing with precision the various circles within which it was to be carried on12. In referring today to this document that gave the programme of Paul VI's pontificate, I keep thanking God that this great Predecessor of mine, who was also truly my father, knew how to display ad extra, externally, the true countenance of the Church, in spite of the various internal weaknesses that affected her in the postconciliar period.

Ella debe conducir, al mismo tiempo, a aquel diálogo que Pablo VI en la Encíclica Ecclesiam suam llamó «diálogo de la salvación», distinguiendo con precisión los diversos ámbitos dentro de los cuales debe ser llevado a cabo.12 Cuando hoy me refiero a este documento programático del pontificado de Pablo VI, no ceso de dar gracias a Dios, porque este gran Predecesor mío y al mismo tiempo verdadero padre, no obstante las diversas debilidades internas que han afectado a la Iglesia en el período posconciliar, ha sabido presentar «ad extra», al exterior, su auténtico rostro.
