On August 1, 1785, Ferdinand Berthoud gave five clocks to the captain of the Astrolabe, Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse (1748-1788), as he was leaving on an expedition around the world with the aim of adding to the discoveries of James Cook (1728-1779) in the Pacific Ocean.
