His most famous work, Apologeticus, denounces the unjust behaviour of political authorities toward the Church; explains and defends the teachings and customs of Christians; spells out differences between the new religion and the main philosophical currents of the time; and manifests the triumph of the Spirit that counters its persecutors with the blood, suffering and patience of the martyrs: "Refined as it is", the African writes, "your cruelty serves no purpose. On the contrary, for our community, it is an invitation.

Su obra más conocida, el Apologético, denuncia el comportamiento injusto de las autoridades políticas con respecto a la Iglesia; explica y defiende las enseñanzas y las costumbres de los cristianos; presenta las diferencias entre la nueva religión y las principales corrientes filosóficas de la época; manifiesta el triunfo del Espíritu, que opone a la violencia de los perseguidores la sangre, el sufrimiento y la paciencia de los mártires: «Aunque sea refinada —escribe el autor africano—, vuestra crueldad no sirve de nada; más aún, para nuestra comunidad constituye una invitación.
