تقوم شعبة الشرطة بدور الهيئة الاستشارية الأولى لوكيل الأمين العام في كل مسائل أعمال الشرطة وتتولى مسؤولية التوجيه الاستراتيجي والإدارة في كل هذه المسائل في إطار عمليات السلام؛ وتقوم باستعراض كافة العمليات وتوجه عمليات الاستجابة للحوادث والمسائل البالغة الأهمية التي تستجد في الميدان، وتضع إطارات للشروع في عمليات جديدة للشرطة استجابة لقرارات الأمم المتحدة، وتكون حلقة وصل مع إدارة الشؤون السياسية، ولجنة بناء السلام ومكتب دعم بناء السلام فضلا عن غيرها من إدارات الأمم المتحدة ووكالاتها وصناديقها وبرامجها والمنظمات غير الحكومية والدوائر الأكاديمية والمجتمع المدني

The Police Division serves as the primary advisory body to the Under-Secretary-General on all policing issues and is responsible for: the strategic direction and management of such issues in peace operations; maintaining an overview of all operations and directing responses to critical incidents and issues that arise in the field; establishing frameworks for launching new police operations in response to United Nations resolutions; liaison with the Department of Political Affairs, the Peacebuilding Commission, the Peacebuilding Support Office and other United Nations Departments, agencies, funds and programmes as well as Member States, regional organizations, non-governmental organizations, the academic community and civil society

La División de Policía cumple la función de órgano asesor primordial del Secretario General Adjunto en todos los asuntos policiales y se encarga de la dirección y gestión estratégica de todos esos asuntos en las operaciones de paz; lleva la supervisión general de todas las operaciones y dirige las respuestas a los incidentes y cuestiones críticas que se plantean sobre el terreno; establece estructuras para lanzar nuevas operaciones policiales en respuesta a resoluciones de las Naciones Unidas; mantiene enlaces con el Departamento de Asuntos Políticos, la Comisión de Consolidación de la Paz, la Oficina de Apoyo a la Consolidación de la Paz, otros departamentos, organismos, fondos y programas de las Naciones Unidas, así como Estados Miembros, organizaciones regionales, organizaciones no gubernamentales, el mundo académico y la sociedad civil
