The Ministry of Earth Sciences, the National Institute of Oceanography and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Centre for Marine Living Research and Ecology and the National Biodiversity Authority are some of the institutions doing pioneering work related to oceans.An Integrated Coastal and Marine Area Management Project is involved in monitoring sea water quality, shore protection measures, shoreline management, oil spill models through the application of GIS, remote sensing and mathematical modelling for management of vulnerable habitats.

पृथ्वी विज्ञान मंत्रालय, राष्ट्रीय समुद्र विज्ञान संस्थान और भारतीय राष्ट्रीय महासागर सूचना सेवा केंद्र, समुद्री जीवित संसाधनों और पारिस्थितिकी केंद्र और राष्ट्रीय जैव विविधता प्राधिकरण, जैसे महासागरों से संबंधित कुछ संस्थाएं अग्रणी काम कर रही हैं। दुर्बल अधिवासों के प्रबंधन के लिए एक एकीकृत तटीय और समुद्री क्षेत्र प्रबंधन परियोजना स्थापित है जो जीआईएस (भौगोलिक सूचना प्रणाली), सुदूर संवेदन और गणितीय प्रतिरूपण के प्रयोग से समुद्र के जल की गुणवत्ता, तट सुरक्षा उपाय, तटरेखा प्रबंधन, तेल रिसाव प्रतिररूपों की निगरानी करता है|
