Apparatus (10) for providing optical radiation (3) having a signal wavelength &lgr;s (4), which apparatus (10) comprises atleast one pump (5) for providing pump radiation (15), a grain medium (6), and energy limiting means (2), in which the pump radiation (15) acts on the gain medium (6) to provide stored energy (7) and gain (8) for optical amplification, characterised in that the gain (8) has a maximum gain (14) at a wavelength (18) at which the maximum gainoiccurs (14), and the energy limiting sneans (2) limits the maximum gain (14) and the amount of stored energy (7) that is able to be stored to values below those at which the stored energy (7) will cause damage to the apparatus (10).

Ce dispositif (10) comprend au moins une pompe (5) servant à produire un rayonnement de pompage (15), un milieu d'amplification (6) et des moyens de limitation d'énergie (2), le rayonnement de pompage (15) exerçant une action sur le milieu d'amplification (6) afin de produire une accumulation d'énergie (7) et un gain (8) d'amplification optique, ce gain (8) atteignant son niveau maximum (14) à une longueur d'onde (18) permettant d'atteindre le maximum du gain (14) et les moyens de limitation d'énergie (2) limitant ce gain maximum (14) et la quantité d'accumulation d'énergie (7) pouvant être accumulée, à des valeurs inférieures à celles auxquelles l'accumulation d'énergie (7) provoquera la détérioration du dispositif (10).
