The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour rose to greater prominence during the thirties. At the time of its formation in 1926 it had a membership of twenty-four, mostly more conservative artists. 12 By 1940 the Society had grown to forty-three 13 and had become one of the leading exponents of progressive Canadian art.
