The European Union has been increasingly critical on this subject in recent years and international action has been effective in protecting a number of them. Observers note that in Tunisia there is no effective counterweight to the power of the government, no independent judiciary, and the media and trade unions are at the orders of the government, which controls every aspect of life and society.

Le régime tunisien, malgré la libéralisation de l’économie et l’existence du multipartisme, présente un caractère autoritaire régulièrement dénoncé par les organisations défendant les droits de Tendance des principaux partis tunisiens : - Harakat Ettajdid : ancien parti communiste ; - Parti de l’Unité populaire et Union démocratique unioniste : centre gauche ; - Parti social libéral : gauche ; - Mouvement des démocrates socialistes : centre gauche ; - Rassemblement constitutionnel démocratique : parti historique, héritier du parti Neo-Destour.
