বহু সূত্র বলেছে যে প্রাচীন ভারতে এবং কেরালায় প্রতিদিনের পোশাকগুলোয় 'কুরপাসিকা' বা 'স্তনপট্টের সাথে মিল রেখে ভাঁজ করা বা পাতানো ধুতি (সারং) মোড়ানো হতো এবং মাঝে মধ্যে 'উত্তরিয়া' নামক একটি টুকরার ব্যবহার হতো যেটি ঊর্ধাঙ্গ বা মাথা ঢাকার কাজে ব্যবহার করা হতো।

Numerous sources say that everyday costume in ancient India until recent times in Kerala consisted of a pleated dhoti or (sarong) wrap, combined with a breast band called krpsaka or stanapaa and occasionally a wrap called uttarya that could at times be used to cover the upper body or head.
