As chair of the Group of 77 for 2016, Thailand had worked with G77 members and development partners to strengthen South – South Cooperation and share its home-grown approach based on Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP) to promote sustainable development. Through the framework of SEP, which was developed by His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand has been promoting people-centered development and resilience that align with the SDGs and resonate with volunteerism's core values of mutuality and solidarity. Youth volunteering in SEP projects is recognized as an important channel for Thai youth to develop human and social capital and harness their energy, skills, and innovative thinking for sustainable development.

นอกจากนี้ ในฐานะผู้ประสานงานระหว่างสหประชาชาติกับอาเซียนด้านการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืน ประเทศไทยโดยกรมความร่วมมือระหว่างประเทศ จึงร่วมมือกับ UNV จัดการประชุมดังกล่าว ซึ่งเป็นความร่วมมือกับหน่วยงานในเครือสหประชาชาติกิจกรรมแรกที่สอดแทรกการประยุกต์ใช้ปรัชญาของเศรษฐกิจพอเพียงในความร่วมมือเพื่อการพัฒนา โดยจะมีผู้แทนกว่า ๑๐๐ คน จากประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียน องค์กรอาสาสมัคร สถาบันการศึกษา และองค์การระหว่างประเทศ โดยให้ความสําคัญกับการส่งเสริมการดําเนินงานด้านอาสาสมัครเยาวชนระหว่างประเทศกําลังพัฒนา หรือความร่วมมือใต้ - ใต้ (South – South Cooperation) ผู้เข้าร่วมประชุมฯ จะมีโอกาสได้แลกเปลี่ยน แบ่งปันแนวปฏิบัติที่ดีร่วมกันประเมินความท้าทาย ตลอดจนโอกาสในกิจกรรมอาสาสมัครเพื่อเป็นแรงผลักดันให้เกิดการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืนในอาเซียนและอื่น ๆ
