本発明は、液晶セルと偏光板とを備えた液晶ディスプレイであって、上記液晶セルは、複数の画素を含んで構成される第1基板及び第2基板と、液晶分子を含む垂直配向型の液晶層と、上記第1基板の液晶層側の表面に設けられた第1配向膜と、上記第2基板の液晶層側の表面に設けられた第2配向膜とを備え、上記複数の画素は各々、1以上の配向領域を有するものであり、上記配向領域において、第1及び第2基板表面に対して液晶分子の長軸方向がプレチルト角を有し、第1配向膜近傍の液晶分子の長軸方向を第1基板表面に投影した方位と第2配向膜近傍の液晶分子の長軸方向を第2基板表面に投影した方位とが互いに交差し、上記偏光板は、液晶セルの観察者側に設けられる円偏光板を必須とする。
