Although the existence of bona fide purchases is a major obstacle to solving this problem, the fact remains that an effort to clean up the art market is highly desirable, and different methods are moreover envisaged in various legal instruments, such as the following: uniform and specific civil rules relating to the restitution of cultural assets; requirement of proof of manifest care by the purchaser; compensation procedure in the event of restitution; uniform extension of the prescription period for the recovery of property, or indeed non-applicability of statutory limitation to certain assets of great value.

Pour autant que cette question se heurte assez fatalement à l'institution de l'acquéreur de bonne foi, il demeure qu'un effort d'assainissement du marché de l'art est hautement souhaitable par différents moyens, envisagés d'ailleurs par divers instruments juridiques, tels que : règles civiles uniformes et spécifiques portant sur la restitution de biens culturels ; exigence de la preuve d'une prudence manifeste de l'acquéreur ; procédure d'indemnisation en cas de restitution ; prolongation uniforme de la prescription acquisitive, voire imprescriptibilité pour certains biens de grande valeur.
