Dentro de cada época se han seleccionado a los artistas más importantes - El Greco, Ribera, Sorolla, además de autores extranjeros que trabajaron en España o influyeron directamente en su pintura, como Tiziano, Antonio Moro o Rubens - y los temas más representativos, para que el visitante pueda conocer, además del devenir estilístico de la pintura española,cómo a lo largo del tiempo cambiaron los intereses temáticos y se fue ampliando el dominio iconográfico del arte.
