Unlike an ordinary callbox, its telephone was located behind a hinged door so it could be used from the outside, and the interior of the box was, in effect, a miniature police station for use by police officers to read and fill in reports, take meal breaks and even temporarily hold detainees until the arrival of transport.

일반적인 전화 박스와는 달리 경찰 박스의 전화기는 여닫이문 뒤편에 달려 있어서 바깥에서 사용할 수 있도록 했고, 박스 내부에는 경찰관들이 보고서를 읽거나 작성하고, 식사시간이나 휴식시간을 가지고, 심지어는 차량이 도착하기 전까지 죄수들을 임시로 가두어 놓는 사실상의 경찰서이다.
