I Irland foregår det meste af lærlingeuddannelserne siden 1995 inden for et enhedssystem, Standard Based Apprenticeship Programme; FAS - statens kontor for arbejde og beskæftigelse - står for planlægningen af alle forløb i de forskellige lærlingeuddannelsesfaser og for de teoretiske uddannelseskurser, der flankerer den praktiske uddannelse i virksomheden.

In Austria more than 200 professions use the apprenticeship system; in Great Britain the modern apprenticeship system - which started up in 1995 - underlies the National Vocational Qualification System (NVQ), based on the identification of industrial skills; it guarantees a person's ability to carry out an activity at a specific level (in Great Britain there are currently 500 NVQs for 150 occupations, which cover 80 % of all occupations); in Ireland, most apprentice training programmes have been carried out under a single system since 1995: the Standard Based Apprenticeship Programme, FAS - the government agency for jobs and employment - is responsible for planning the activities of all apprentices throughout the various stages of the apprenticeship, and for the training activities which back up hands-on experience within the firm.
