In the lead up to the Gleneagles G8 Summit in July 2005, Bono, Richard Curtis, DATA and others helped to organize the Live 8 concerts to put pressure on the G8 to endorse the findings of the Commission for Africa, which largely reflected the data deal approach and made a commitment to fighting extreme poverty in Africa.

In aanloop naar de Gleneagles G8-top in juli 2005 hielpen Bono, Richard Curtis, DATA en anderen de Live 8-concerten organiseren. Ze wilden hiermee de G8 onder druk zetten en hen zo de conclusies van de Commissie voor Afrika laten onderschrijven. Die conclusies weerspiegelden dan ook grotendeels de DATA-deal-aanpak en beloofden een engagement om extreme armoede in Afrika te helpen bestrijden.
