ولُفت الانتباه إلى وجود طائفة واسعة من التراخيص، ابتداءً من التراخيص التي لا تضع أي نوع من أنواع القيود، إلى التراخيص التي تتضمن قيوداً محدودة (مثل الحاجة للإقرار بفضل المؤلف الأصلي/المؤلفين الأصليين) مرورا بالتراخيص التي تفرض التزامات متبادلة و/أو تتضمن شروطاً لبراءة الاختراع.
