Hence the names used by the otomíes to refer to themselves are numerous: ñätho (Toluca Valley), hñähñu (Mezquital Valley), ñäñho (Santiago de Mezquititlán, south of Querétaro) and ñ'yühü (Northern Puebla Sierra), Pahuatlán) are some of the names used by the Otomi to call themselves in their own languages, although it is common when talking in Spanish they use the Nahuatl ethnonym "Otomi".

De ahí que los nombres con los que los otomíes se llaman a sí mismos son numerosos: ñätho (valle de Toluca), hñähñu (valle del Mezquital), ñäñho (Santiago Mezquititlán en el Sur de Querétaro) y ñ'yühü (Sierra Norte de Puebla, Pahuatlán) son algunos de los gentilicios que los otomíes emplean para llamarse a sí mismos en sus propias lenguas, aunque es frecuente que, cuando hablan en español, empleen el etnónimo otomí, de origen náhuatl. Como ocurre con la mayor parte de los etnónimos empleados para referirse a los pueblos indígenas de México, el término otomí no es nativo del pueblo al que hace referencia.
