Adults carry the fungi on a special structure in their mouthparts, and when they begin chewing the sapwood, the fungi quickly multiplies and further disrupts the vascular system, preventing the tree from releasing pitch into the area.

Les dendroctones du pin ponderosa transportent aussi avec eux des champignons du genre Ophiostoma ou « champignons du bleuissement » . Les adultes transportent les spores du champignon dans un réceptacle spécialisé de leurs pièces buccales et dès qu’ils commencent à grignoter l’aubier, ils répandent les champignons qui se multiplient rapidement et perturbent encore plus le système vasculaire, empêchant l’arbre d’inonder de résine l’endroit attaqué.
