本発明は、近接場走査顕微鏡において、試料表面層の屈折率分布あるいは誘電率分布に依存した近接場光画像のコントラストを向上させ、近接場光画像のSN比及び測定再現性を向上させるものであって、検査対象試料上を相対的に走査する測定探針と、前記測定探針にレーザ光を照射するレーザ光照射系と、レーザ光の一部を取り出して参照光とする参照光生成系と、レーザ光の照射により前記測定探針と前記検査対象試料との間で発生した近接場光の散乱光と前記参照光とを干渉させて干渉光を生成する干渉光学系と、前記干渉光を検出する検出器とを備えた走査プローブ顕微鏡を提供する。
